Chapter Fifteen

Jet

After soaring for a few hours, they finally reached some familiar land, and the doctor’s house was easy to spot on the cliffside. Jet forced himself and Devon upward to make a landing just far enough up to stay out of sight. Messy onyx hair fell in front of his face, and he calmly brushed it out. Devon raced ahead, not waiting for Jet at all.

“Where are you going?” Jet asked.

Devon didn’t answer and kept walking.

“Devon, wait,” Jet shouted just loud enough for his voice to carry over the crashing waves..

“Walk faster,” Devon called back.

Jet tightened his jaw and jogged up next to him. “What’s your problem?”

“I don’t have a problem. I just want to kill this guy so I can go home.” He stared straight ahead, barely blinking.

Jet swallowed and furrowed his brows. “Dev… hang on, man. Hang on.” He grabbed the boy’s arm and crouched down.

“Let go!” he yelled.

“Devon, listen to me.” His voice was masked with uncertainty. He wanted Malik dead, but to hear a child say it made him feel more sober than he’d felt in a long time. His death had been Lacey’s dying wish. And as much as Jet wanted to fulfill that wish, he knew nothing they did would bring her back to him. To them. “No one wants to see that asshole burn as much as me, but you can’t be the one who does this. I couldn’t live with myself if you killed someone.”

“He’s not just ‘someone’. And it’s what Lacey wanted. She asked me to.”

“I know bud, but you gotta know. Once you do something like that, you’ll never be the same. And... I like who you are.”

“Psh,” said Devon, looking off to the side.

“Stop it. Listen to me… If all of our problems could be solved by eliminating the people we don’t like, this would be a much happier world. But sadly, we can’t. Nothing in this world is simple. Nothing. And that’s why I drink…” he said, mumbling the last bit.

“Whatever. You’re just scared.” He wiggled, but Jet held him still.

“Devon, please,” Jet said, stalling to find words to calm the kid down. Or at least get him to stop hating him. “Maybe I am scared, but being scared isn’t a bad thing. Everyone gets scared sometimes.”

“Not me! I’m a Sparrow, and we don’t get scared!” Devon shouted. His face scrunched up, and his glasses slipped down to the tip of his tiny nose.

“I give up, man,” Jet said and shoved him away.

“Yeah, go ahead. Quit!” Devon yelled while Jet rolled his eyes and began to walk past him. “You’re good at quitting. ‘Cept when you drink!”

A twig snapped, and Jet pivoted around to face him, yelling as loud as he could. “Why are you so angry? Why do you hate me?!”

“You never said you’re sorry!” Devon screamed back, his words hitting him like a brick wall. Jet raised his brows with the worst realization.

“It’s the least you could do, Jet, but you’ve never said it…” Devon sprinted past him, and all Jet could do was watch him run away.
